What Zone Type should I choose?

Multiple Zone Types are available within various tools in PCT Agcloud. The following article explains how each one functions. 


- Standard Deviation

Description:
Classifies data based on how much the values deviate from the mean of the dataset. Each zone represents a specific range of standard deviations from the mean. It is ideal for identifying outliers and highlighting variation from a central trend. 

Size of Zone Intervals: 

The value entered specifies the range around the mean. The smaller the number, the higher the number of zones and vice versa.


- Equal Interval

Description:
Divides the range of data values into equal-sized intervals. For example, if data ranges from 0 to 100 and you want five classes, each will cover a range of 20. Best for data that is evenly distributed.

Number of Zone Intervals:

The value entered specifies the number of equal divisions in the data and, therefore, the number of zones.

 


-Equal Area

Description:
Assigns classes so that each zone covers an equal physical area on the map, regardless of the distribution of data values.
Prioritizes geographic representation over data value representation.

Number of Zone Intervals:

The value entered specifies the number of zones desired. 


-Fixed Interval

Description:
Groups values within the dataset according to fixed thresholds. Similar to equal interval, but the interval size is predetermined by the user. Useful when comparing datasets using consistent classification, or when working with thresholds established by regulations or standards. 

Size of Zone Intervals:

The value entered specifies the size of divisions in the data.


-Jenks Natural Breaks

Description:
Detects "natural" groupings or breaks in the data based on its distribution. It minimizes variance within classes and maximizes variance between classes. Useful for visualizing real-world patterns in skewed or uneven datasets and creates more meaningful zones when data is clustered. 

Number of Zone Intervals:
The value entered specifies the number of zones desired. 


-Custom Breaks

Description:
Groups data into manually specified classes. Allows users to define class boundaries based on field knowledge.

Breaks:

Values entered with commas in between determine the size and number of classes (ex. 50, 100, 150, 200, 250).


-Color Breaks

Description:
Replicates the visual of the unzoned base map.
